Depending on where you are located this may not be news for you. There is a green revolution going on in weddings and if the trend hasn’t hit you yet it is coming. The environmentally friendly, socially conscience couples are seeking out ways to express their convictions in their weddings.
Have you caught the wave? If not it may be time that you started looking into it. If it has already hit your market you are now behind the curve. If it hasn’t hit your market yet now is a golden opportunity for a little cutting edge marketing.
What are green weddings? Think ‘carbon footprint’. Think ‘save the planet’. Think ‘blood diamonds’. Today’s brides were raised to be conscious of how the choices they make in their everyday life effect the environment. The have also been raised to be aware of human rights conditions around the globe. Their thinking is being reinforced by the dominance in the news of global warming and by the entertainment industry with movies like “Blood Diamond” staring Leonardo DiCaprio and Al Gore’s movie “An Inconvenient Truth”. Modern couples have started to bring their convictions to the wedding.
It is time to take a look at what you are doing that is perceived to fit into this category. You may be doing things as simple as recycling or only using environmentally friendly dry cleaners. You may already be using recycled paper where ever possible or composting your waste. While researching a recent article I interviewed wedding professionals as diverse as entertainment agencies and florists; from caterers to dry cleaners to gown manufacturers. Almost everyone could think of at least a few things they either offer or are doing in the background that is ‘green’. Several of my sources tell me that there is information beginning to show up in their trade journals. There is a new magazine “Portovert” that bills itself as “the first and only magazine for eco-savvy brides” that is worth a read.
Once you have investigated what you are or can do that will aid these couples in their goal of having a socially conscious wedding you need to market it. Your website is the perfect place to do this. Have your webmaster ad a page headed “Green Wedding” to your website and list the things you are doing or offer that fit the category.
The good news is that most people that are seeking to make these kinds of informed choices are well aware that they are going to have to pay between 10 to 35% more. If I read that right, it will be the better educated couples with the higher disposable income that are going to be looking for green options.
